Underwood designed a great many buildings for federal agencies on the West Coast. In 1932, his firm was known as "Gilbert Stanley Underwood and Company, Ltd." (See Los Angeles, California, City Directory, 1933, p. 2480). After finishing his work on the Sun Valley Lodge for W. Averell Harriman (1891–1986), Underwood shuttered his private practice, and relocated to Washington, DC, to work as an architect for the US Treasury Department.
