An early plan for the Zion Lodge, designed by Gilbert S. Underwood on a grand scale, was rejected by the Director of the National Park Service, Stephen Mather (1867-1930). This plan consisted of an inn with 75 rooms, and was dominated by a central double-height foyer lounge. Linear wings projected at angles from the lounge area, oriented to take in the best views. A second version, much less grand in scale and use of materials, was okayed by Mather in late summer 1924.

Additions and alterations were made in 1926. The dining room and other portions of the lodge were enlarged, an assembly hall added and a curio shop opened.

Demolished; the first lodge burned in 01/1966. A second lodge was built in 1966.
