Architect Gilbert Stanley Underwood of Los Angeles, CA, designed the Bryce Canyon Lodge and the Zion Lodge #1 (burned in 1966) at about the same time. In 2010, Forever Resorts, LLC, of Scottsdale, AZ, operated Bryce Canyon Lodge for the National Park Service; Xanterra, formerly known as the Fred Harvey Company, was the previous operator. George Albert Wood of the Utah Park Company served as the Building Contractor for the lodges at Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon.

Nearby to the Bryce Canyon Lodge, the National Park Service erected 67 regular cottages and 5 deluxe cottages for tourist use by 1927. The smaller cabins were inexpensive to build, costing only $900 each; the deluxe cost about $4100 more to construct. Following this time, more cabins were built.

Additions were made to the Bryce Canyon Lodge soon after it first opened.
