R.M. Schindler immigrated to the United States from Austria in March 1914. He worked in Chicago upon arrival for Ottenheimer, Stern, and Reichert, Architects, from 1914-1918.

He worked for Frank Lloyd Wright in Spring Green, WI, from February 1918-1919 and traveled from Chicago to Los Angeles, CA, stopping in Denver, CO, Salt Lake City, UT, Taos, NM, and the Grand Canyon, AZ, in 1915. The architect experienced temporary dissatisfaction with Los Angeles and considered traveling to Japan to work for Wright or returning to Europe in mid-1921.

He became deeply affected by the beauty of Yosemite National Park, 1921, and gradually adjusted to life in Los Angeles after he settled there for good in 1920.

According to some sources, Schindler completed approximately 330 buildings in a career spanning 1915-1953 in Chicago, IL, and Los Angeles, CA.
