Schindler designed this very unusual house for a woman with whom he had a romantic relationship.

Three plywood chairs designed for the Ellen Janson House were offered for sale at the Los Angeles Modern Auctions' sale of 02/10/2008; in this auction, two letters between Ellen Janson and Schindler were sold with the chairs. According to the Los Angeles Times, "Three plywood chairs designed by architect Rudolph M. Schindler for the late-1940s residence of Ellen Janson will be offered with correspondence between the two, which LAMA discreetly describes as having a 'close friendship dating back to the 1920s.'"
