Relocation

Frederick Louis Roehrig was born in Le Roy, NY, a town about 27 miles southwest of Rochester. It appears that his family relocated to PA by about 1865 and then to Ithaca, NY, by 1875, where Frederick's father, Frederick L.O. Roehrig, Sr., was a Professor of Languages. According to the 1875 NY State Census, the Roehrigs lived in a frame dwelling in Ithaca, worth approximately $2,500.

Frederick L.O. Roehrig, Jr., lived for much of his adult life in Pasadena, CA, town perfect for a young architect, as it was growing rapidly with many affluent and cultivated newcomers, many eager to build "artistic" dwellings. He resided here by at least 1886, and was listed as living at 501 South Oakland Avenue in Pasadena, CA, between 1894 and 1896. The architect and his family dwelled at 501 Oakland Avenue, in a neighborhood just southeast of Pasadena's central business district, in 1920. The household included his wife Gavina, and their children R. Pauline and R. Stewart. The Roehrigs owned their own house free and clear of a mortgage. Roehrig, his wife and daughter resided in a rented house at 1136 North Hill Avenue in Pasadena in 1930. The house had a rent of $65 per month according to the 1930 US Census. Frederick Louis Otto Roehrig, Sr., (was as an eminent linguist who spent much of his career at Cornell University. A paper by Elena Barreiro summarized his career: "Professor Frederick Louis Otto Roehrig, a specialist in modern and ancient languages, left us a legacy of important documentary materials. Roehrig was a talented person: he held both a Ph.D. in philology and a medical degree and practiced otolaryngology.2 His linguistic works include books and articles on Sanskrit, ancient and modern Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Persian, Turkish, Malayan, Finnish, German, Irish, and French. In addition, he undertook research on a variety of North American languages, immersing himself in various tribal communities. Roehrig not only created vocabularies of Inuit, Dakota, and numerous Athabaskan and Salish languages, but also championed the cause of linguistic research in those languages. He passionately argued that 'on this continent, researches in philology, ethnology, and history should have for their main object the languages and nations of America.' (Roehrig 1874: 16.)" (See Elena Barreiro, Simon Fraser University.ca, "Frederick Roehrig: A Forgotten Name in Salish Linguistics," accessed 08/01/2022.)
