The architectural firm, headquartered in Berkeley, CA, formed to compete in the Broome County, NY, Cultural Center Competition in 1967. It took first prize in a field of 57 entrants. (See "River Given Credit for Design," Binghamton Press and Sun-Bulletin, 11/12/1967, p. 1.)
All three architects received Master of Architecture degrees from Harvard University's Graduate School of Design, and later all taught at the University of California, Berkeley by 1967. (See "River Given Credit for Design," Binghamton Press and Sun-Bulletin, 11/12/1967, p. 1.)
The firm was known as "Elbasani, Logan, Severin, Freeman, Architects" during the period c. 1975-1980.
The partnership came to be known as "ELS Architecture and Urban Design." (It was called this in 2008.)
By 2022, the firm continued to be known as "ELS Architecture + Urban Design" and maintained three offices: a headquarters at 2040 Addison Street Berkeley, CA 94704 (tel: 510.549.2929); a branch in Los Angeles at 950 South Grand Avenue Suite 400 Los Angeles, CA 90015, (tel: 213.348.1155); and a branch in Sacramento: 800 Howe Avenue, Suite #330, Sacramento, CA 95825 (tel: 916.301.4411). Partners in 2022 included: Diana Hayton, David Masenten, Gerald Navarro, Mark Schatz, Geno Yun and Jeffrey Zieba. Clarence D. Manuyac, Jr., was the President and CEO.
