Personal

Relocation

Donn H. Logan was born in Detroit, MI, in 1939. In 01/1937, two years before his birth, Logan's parents resided at 15612 Lola Avenue in Detroit, MI. In about 1940, Donn lived with his family at 15385 Dixie in the Redford Township area of Detroit. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation National Archives at St. Louis; St. Louis, Missouri; WWII Draft Registration Cards for Michigan, 10/16/1940-03/31/1947; Record Group: Records of the Selective Service System, 147; Box: 716, accessed 03/21/2022.) His family remained in the Detroit area until about 1945, when they relocated to the rapidly growing city of Phoenix, AZ.

In 1945, Donn's parents settled in a dwelling at 501c Alzona Park, a public housing tract on the northwest corner of 35th and Van Buren in Phoenix. (See Phoenix, Arizona, City Directory, 1945, p. 354.) Alzona Park was erected in 1942 to house war-time workers at a new extrusion plant of the Aluminum Company of America (ALCOA). ALCOA built two such extrusion facilities to assist in the war effort, a western one in Phoenix and an eastern factory in Pottsville, PA.

Seven years, later the Logans lived at 4042 West Coronado Road in Phoenix, and remained here in 1956. (See Phoenix, Arizona, City Directory, 1952, p. 1873 and Phoenix, Arizona, City Directory, 1956, p. 1362.)

Logan resided at 1096 Miller Avenue in Berkeley, CA, in 1984.

Parents

Donn Logan's mother was Catherine E. Watts (born 1915 in Fredonia, KS-d. 1977 in Phoenix, AZ). She was the youngest of three daughters of Joseph George Watts (born 02/11/1884 in Putnam County, OH-d. 02/22/1966 in Los Angeles County, CA) and Martha Fay Fairman (born 07/03/1890 in Columbus, OH- d. 03/23/1930 in Detroit, MI). Her parents moved about frequently, and she likely endured some upheavel in her early years, worsened by the early death of her mother from complications due to diabetes insipidus. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Michigan Department of Community Health, Division for Vital Records and Health Statistics; Lansing, Michigan; Death Records, accessed 03/21/2022.)

Catherine had been born in KS, but lived in Stockton, CA, by 1920, where her father worked as a glassblower in a glass factory. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1920; Census Place: Stockton Ward 5, San Joaquin, California; Roll: T625_143; Page: 16A; Enumeration District: 181, accessed 03/21/2022.) A decade later, George Watts was a widower, living with Catherine in Detroit, MI, and working as a deliveryman for an ice company. Three young men roomed in the rented house at 1842 Temple Avenue to add income for George and his daughter. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1930; Census Place: Detroit, Wayne, Michigan; Page: 10B; Enumeration District: 0200; FHL microfilm: 2340774, accessed 03/21/2022.) George remarried on 10/22/1942 in Detroit, MI, to Agnes A. Ostrom (born c. 1895 in North Warren, PA), a bookeeper, and worked as a police officer at the time. Catherine managed the household after her marriage on 02/15/1936 in Detroit, MI to Hubert Armstrong Logan (born 08/01/1912 in Jackson Center, OH-d. 11/18/1967 in Phoenix, AZ). (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Michigan Department of Community Health, Division of Vital (See Ancestry.com, Records and Health Statistics; Lansing, MI, USA; Michigan, Marriage Records, 1867-1952; Film: 278; Film Title: 82 Wayne 154650-157949; Film Description: Wayne [Dates TBD], accessed 03/21/2022.)

Hubert's parents were Bon Washington Logan (born 02/22/1888 in OH-d. 06/10/1958 in Phoenix, AZ) and Mattie Ora Armstrong (born 07/17/1890 in Jackson, OH-d. 06/23/1969 in Phoenix, AZ). Bon Logan worked in lumber throughout his life, both in the Detroit and Phoenix areas. Hubert was one of at least six children, and during his life, he worked in multiple jobs. In the 1930s, he worked as a driver or chauffeur for a trucking company. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1930; Census Place: Detroit, Wayne, Michigan; Page: 69A; Enumeration District: 0539; FHL microfilm: 2340789, accessed 03/21/2022.) In about 1940, Hubert worked for the C.L. Ibsen Company, a wholesaler of sash, doors and moldings in Detroit. (See Ancestry.com, Detail Source Source Citation National Archives at St. Louis; St. Louis, Missouri; WWII Draft Registration Cards for Michigan, 10/16/1940-03/31/1947; Record Group: Records of the Selective Service System, 147; Box: 716, accessed 03/21/2022.)

Bon Logan, Hubert Logan and their families relocated to Phoeniz, AZ, after World War II. Bon worked as a salesman for the Reed Lumber and Hardware Company, and three of his sons, including Hubert, had positions as yardmen for this firm. (See Phoenix, Arizona, City Directory, 1945, p. 354.)

By 1952, Hubert had switched jobs, becoming the fire chief at the Naval Air Facility (NAF) / Naval Air Station (NAS) Litchfield Park, and continued in this capacity in 1956. (See Phoenix, Arizona, City Directory, 1952, p. 1873 and Phoenix, Arizona, City Directory, 1956, p. 1362.) NAS Litchfield Park closed in 1968, and the CIty of Phoenix obtained the property, utilizing it as Phoenix Goodyear Airport.

Catherine and Hubert had three children in total, two of whom died early in life. Donn had an unnamed sister, who was born and died on 01/31/1937 in Detroit, MI. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Michigan Department of Community Health, Division for Vital Records and Health Statistics; Lansing, Michigan; Death Records, 03/21/2022.)

He also had a younger brother, Dan Richard Logan, (born 02/03/1943 in MI-d. 09/23/1950 in Phoenix, AZ), who died of encephalomyelitis at the age of seven years, seven months and 20 days.
