Haag began practicing landscape architecture while living in the San Francisco Bay Area. He worked here for three years until 1960, maintaining an office on Pier 18 on the Embarcadero. Haag gradually transplanted himself and his practice in 1958 to Seattle, WA, and finished the move by 1960, providing him time to work as Lawrence Halprin's representative to work on the Seattle World's Fair Landscape Plan.

In c. 1960, Richard Haag Associates occupied an office at 2923 Fuhrman Avenue East in Seattle.
