"The designer's concept of retaining old gasworks in a public park, orginally opposed both by city officials and the public, has now proven to be the centerpiece of an award-winning park desing. The uncluttered views of the city and distant Cascade mountains have been retained. Original machinery, made safe for children to climb on, was painted in strong colors to stimulate their interest. An old boiler was fitted with a small stage and dance floor, demonstrating how imaginative design can reclaim abandoned industrial artifacts."
