Shepley lived on Cottage Street in Brookline, MA. The family was quite prosperous enabling it to retain 4 Irish servants. Next door on Cottage Street, G.F. Shepley's mother-in-law, Julia Richardson, lived with her two sons, H.H. Richardson, Jr., and Frederick S. Richardson and their two servants.

His father was John R. Shepley, (born c. 1818), who lived with his mother, Mary A., who was 14 years younger than her husband (born c. 1832). John and Mary had six children by 1880: Julia Shepley Coolidge (09/1856-1935), John F. (born c. 1859), George F., Marie Louisa (born c. 1863), Annie (born c. 1866) and Arthur B. (born c. 1873). The Shepleys were also well-to-do, as they employed a nurse, laundress and cook to do household chores in 1880. Julia married George Shepley's partner, Charles Allerton Coolidge, Sr., (1858-1936).

G.F. Shepley, Sr., married the daughter of his boss, H.H. Richardson (1838-1886), Julia Richardson Shepley. She was born on 11/25/1867, in Staten Island, NY, and lived in Brookline, MA, on 12/17/1920. Her father had been born in LA, her mother, MA.

George and Julia Shepley had had five children together by 1900, all of whom survived to that time: Henry R., Julia H., Violet, George F., Jr., and Philip. Henry Richardson Shepley (born on 05/01/1887 in Brookline. MA-d. 1962), became a Partner in the successor firms of Shepley, Rutan and Coolidge, Architects, including Coolidge Shepley Bulfinch and Abbott (1924-1952), Shepley Bulfinch Richardson and Abbott (1952-1962).
