TheLos Angeles, CA, City Directory, 1890, listed the firm of Ernest A. Coxhead as being located in Room #36 of the California Bank Building. Partner, Coxhead and Coxhead, Architects, San Francisco, CA, 1891-1900. In 1900, the San Francisco, California, City Directory, 1900, indicated that Almeric Coxhead, of the firm Coxhead and Coxhead, resided in Los Angeles, CA, while his brother, Ernest, lived at 2421 Green Street in San Francisco.(See Crocker-Langley San Francisco City Directory,1900, p. 471.) From at least 1896 until 1903, Coxhead and Coxhead had its office at 120 Sutter Street. By 1905, the brothers had moved their office to a building at 731 Sutter Street. Relocation
Almeric Coxhead was one year older than his better-known sibling, Ernest. He was born in England. A 1905 US Passport application stated that Almeric had been born in Dorking, Surrey, England. The English Census of 1871 recorded that Almeric, like Ernest, had been born in Eastbourne, Sussex. Almeric resided with his brother, Ernest, at 23 North Fort Street in 1887. (See Los Angeles, California, City Directory, 1887, p. 150.) They moved to San Francisco in either late 1890 or early 1891.
The Crocker-Langley San Francisco City Directories of 1896 and 1898,(see p. 452 and 462, respectively.) recorded that Almeric and his brother, Ernest, shared lodgings at 2421 Green Street in San Francisco. For at least part of 1900, however, Almeric Coxhead lived in Los Angeles, CA, serving as a Southern CA partner in the firm of Coxhead and Coxhead, while his brother Ernest remained in San Francisco living at 2421 Green. The US Census of 1900, taken on 06/01-02/1900, indicated that Almeric lived at 2421 Green Street with Ernest, his wife and son. In 1901, Almeric resided in Berkeley, while Ernest lived at 1362 Union Street in San Francisco. (See Crocker-Langley San Francisco City Directory, 1901, p. 493.)
By 1903, however, Almeric had moved back to San Francisco, returning to 2421 Green Street. (See Crocker-Langley San Francisco City Directory, 1903, p. 497.) Two years later, Almeric had migrated back to Berkeley to live. (See Crocker-Langley San Francisco City Directory, 1905, p. 510.)
Parents
His father, William Palmer Coxhead, worked as a schoolmaster and innkeeper in Hampstead and Eastbourne, England. The family had six children, one of whom, Ernest, worked in an architectural partnership with Almeric.
