The Church of Saint John the Evangelist was Ernest Coxhead's first work in San Francisco, CA. The Episcopal Church in California gave Coxhead three commissions for major churches in San Francisco, Stockton, and Alameda c. 1889, prompting his move to Northern CA from Los Angeles in 1889-1890.

Destroyed in the earthquake and fire of 04/18/1906.
