Mackay enjoyed fishing, walking and the outdoors. His obituary said: "Throughout his life Don was a regional resident of Washington State and a consummate outdoorsman, residing between his homes in Seattle, Morton, Indianola, and San Juan Island. Don enjoyed spending time with his friends and family, cooking for his loved ones, and traveling near and far to ski, hunt, and fish. Don was born and raised in the Seattle area, he attended Mercer Island High School, graduating in the class of 1969."
