Underhill was a 9th-generation American, a descendant of Captain John Underhill, who assisted in the financing of the Puritan's Mayflower expedition and founded the Underhill Family in Boston in 1628. Born in the exclusive Long Island city of Oyster Bay, NY, Francis Underhill had private tutors, hobnobbed with Vanderbilts, Astors and Roosevelts, and enjoyed the Brahmin sports of sailing and polo.
Underhill was a talented amateur architect who produced designs for several houses in the Santa Barbara area.
