Personal

Relocation

Born in Newark, NJ as "Anton Buyko", the architect would Anglicize his name to "John B. Anthony," after 1930. He was named after his father, Anton, who worked as a machinist. As noted in the 1895 New Jersey State Census, his parents Anton, the elder and Rose, lived in Newark's 3rd state census district, ward 13. They already had two children at home when the future John B. Anthony was born in 1896. (See Ancestry.com, Source Information Ancestry.com. New Jersey, U.S., State Census, 1895 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations Inc, 2007, accessed 05/23/2024.)

The architect likely came to CA before 1922 with his family and attended the University of California at Berkeley (UCB). In 1922 and 1923, the Oakland, California, City Directory indicated that "Anton E. Buyko," a student, and "Anton I. Buyko," an interpreter, lived together. In 1922, they resided at 1637 Euclid Avenue and a year later at 2519 Virginia Street in Berkeley, CA. (See Oakland, California, City Directory, 1922, p. 353 and Oakland, California, City Directory, 1923, p. 387.) In these directories, father and son were listed together, and this ambiguity likely prompted "Anton E." to change his name to "John B. Anthony" by the early 1930s.

At age 29 in 1926, Buyko likely made a grand tour of Europe, a trip designed to broaden the cultural background of a young architect at the start of practice. At this time, he had a permanent address of 2306 Ellsworth Street in Downtown Berkeley. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation The National Archives in Washington, DC; Washington, DC, USA; Passenger and Crew Lists of Vessels Arriving at New York, New York, 1897-1957; Microfilm Serial or NAID: T715; RG Title: Records of the Immigration and Naturalization Service, 1787-2004; RG: 85, accessed 06/23/2024.) At the time of his marriage in 1927, he continued to live at 2306 Ellsworth. (See Ancestry.com, Source Information Ancestry.com. California, U.S., Marriage Records from Select Counties, 1850-1941 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2014, accessed 05/23/2024.)

Just after his marriage in 1928, Anton Buyko, Jr., dwelled at 2443 Hilgard Avenue in Berkeley. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation The National Archives in Washington, DC; Washington, DC, USA; Historical Register of National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, 1866-1938; Series: M1749, accessed 05/23/2024.)

He and his wife resided at 2209 Eunice Street in Berkeley in 1930. (See Oakland, California, City Directory, 1930, p. 354 and Ancestry.com, Source Citation California State Library; Sacramento, California; Great Register of Voters, 1930, accessed 05/23/2024

In 1940, Anthony, his wife and three sons lived at 1191 Oxford Street in Berkeley, CA. They owned their own house that had an approximate value of $3,000, according to the US Census of that year. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1940; Census Place: Berkeley, Alameda, California; Roll: m-t0627-00190; Page: 8A; Enumeration District: 1-148, accessed 05/22/2024.) The Anthonys continued to live at 1191 Oxford in 1950.

The architect died in San Francisco, CA, at the age of 87 on 03/12/1979. Parents

His parents Anton Buyko (born 04/21/1864 in Saint Petersburg, Russia-d. 02/11/939 in Napa County, CA) and Rose Beuren were both born in Russia. A passenger manifest from 1923 indicated that Anton, the Elder, was naturalized in the Southern District Court of New York on 01/18/1899. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation The National Archives in Washington, DC; Washington, DC, USA; Passenger and Crew Lists of Vessels Arriving at New York, New York, 1897-1957; Microfilm Serial or NAID: T715; RG Title: Records of the Immigration and Naturalization Service, 1787-2004; RG: 85, accessed 05/23/2024.)

During the Spanish-American War, his father joined the US Army on 05/11/1898 in New York, NY, and served until 10/11/1898, being discharged at Camp Hamilton, KY. He was treated for myocarditis at the US Veteran's Hospital at Sawtelle, Los Angeles, CA, in 1928. This document from the Sawtelle National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers indicated that Anton, Sr., was a machinist, who resided in Oakland, CA, in 1928. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation The National Archives in Washington, DC; Washington, DC, USA; Historical Register of National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, 1866-1938; Series: M1749, accessed 05/23/2024.)

He had an older brother and sister, Jennie Buyko. (See Ancestry.com, Source Information Ancestry.com. New Jersey, U.S., State Census, 1895 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations Inc, 2007, accessed 05/23/2024.) A note in the

Esther was also a student at the UCB, who was about seven years younger.

Her mother was Eugen Sild, her father, Axel (or Alexander) J. Jensen, who both resided previously in Canada, but were both born in Denmark. (See Ancestry.com, Source Information Ancestry.com.
