Firm Notes

Swedish engineer Rudolf Fredrik Berg (1846-1907) founded the "Aktiebolaget Skanska Cementgjuteriet" in 1887. (This name translated roughly as "Skanska Cement Foundry Joint Stock Company.") Berg developed innovations within the cement industry and gained a reputation as a progressive employer concerned with the worker education and fair compensation. His company's name was shortened from "Skanska Cementgjuteriet" to "Skanska" in 1984. Skanska USA Building Incorporated began operations in the United States in 1971 working on subway projects in New York, NY, and Washington, DC. It grew in America through acquisitions of existing contracting firms, the first being the purchase of the Karl Koch Erecting Company of Careteret, NJ, in 1982. This was the first of 13 mergers negotiated by the company between 1989 and 2011. It US subsidiary was headquarted in Parsippany-Troy Hills, NJ, in 2019.

Skanska is a global construction company, with its home office in Stockholm, Sweden; in 2007, it had significant operations in the US, UK, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Poland, the Czech Republic and Argentina.

In 2007, Stuart Graham served as the President and CEO, while Sverker Martin-Lof acted as Chairman of the Board.

By the 2016, at least, Skanska operated a division called "Skanska USA Commercial Development," which developed commercial real estate properties. Since 2016, Charlie Foushée managed Seattle-area operations of Skanska USA Commercial Development, as executive vice president.
