This multi-disciplinary engineering firm originated in New York, NY, in 1928, founded by John F. Hennessy and Adolf G. Syska, two mechanical engineers.
The firm formed a lighting workshop, the Architectural Lighting Group, in 1963. It developed its SHIS-Syska and Hennessy Information System in 1965 and formed an Information and Communication Technology Group in 1986.
Syska-Hennessy expanded to California by the 1970s, and opened a large number of offices in the southeast US in 2003. Branch offices were opened in Washington, DC, (1963); Los Angeles, CA, (1973); San Francisco, CA, (1978); Boston, MA, (1982); Hamilton, NJ, (1987); San Diego, CA, (1987); Dallas, TX, (2003); Jacksonville, FL, (2003); Charlotte, NC, (2003); Atlanta, GA, (2003); Richmond, VA, (2004); Chicago, IL, (2007); Shanghai, China, (2008); Dubai, UAE, (2012); Raleigh, NC, (2014); San Jose, CA, (2018); and Tampa, FL, (2022). In 2023, it maintained four branch locations in CA.
