The building for project for the Biogen Idec Nobel Research and Corporate Campus was broken into three phases, the first having been completed in 2004. Phase one called for the construction of two office buildings, two labs, and a commons building providing 380,000 square feet. Within these five buildings, the following amenities were provided: Biosafety Level 2(BSL-2) suites, radio isotope suites, a vivarium, research laboratories, corporate offices, a data center, a cafeteria and a fitness center. An elevated bridge connected the administration building with a lab facility. The cluster of buff-colored buildings in Biogen's first phase was styled to evoke an "Italian hill village," and was oriented around a meandering, man-made pond.
