Covered in rose granite, the forty-seven story First Interstate Center (later the Wells Fargo Center) contained 1,323,055 gross square feet, 940,648 net (2011), and occupied an entire city block, a 56,400-square-foot site. McKinley Architects produced the design for the hexagonal building--supported by a steel frame--that was designed to rest on a landscaped, three-level plaza. In 2007, Beacon Capital Partners of Boston, MA, purchased the Wells Fargo Center for $403 million or nearly $430 per square foot. In 2011, the building and property had a value of $207,125,000, down from a high of $323,765,000 in 2008. Caroline Tobin in Downtown Seattle Walking Tours said of the building: "The First Interstate reflects current zoning laws and planning policies, especially in its extensive use of bonuses, including the plaza and hillclimb assist." King County maintained some administrative offices in this building at 999 3rd Street in Seattle, WA, c. 2007.
