Overview

The architectural firm of Naramore, Bain, Brady and Johanson (NBBJ) produced a large number of high-profile, Modern commercial and institutional buildings in the immedate aftermath of World War II in the Puget Sound region, the Susan J. Henry Branch of the Seattle Public Library (SPL) being one of them. Others included the Seattle Public Safety Building #2 (Seattle, 1946-1951), University of Washington, Seattle (UW), School of Medicine, Health Sciences Center, (Seattle, 1948-1950), the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, Seattle Branch (Seattle, 1949-1951) and the Children's Orthopedic Hospital #2 (Seattle, 1951-1954) These buildings led the way in setting the International Style architecture as the primary formal vocabulary for large-scale contemporary buildings in Seattle during the period 1946 through 1955.

The Susan J. Henry Branch of the SPL closed to the public on 11/03/2001.

Demolition

The SPL's Susan J. Henry Branch was demolished in early 2002. The Capitol Hill Branch of the SPL opened on this site on 05/31/2003.
