Overview
The firm of Walker and McGough obtained the commission for this important Modern residence for Joel E. Ferris II and his wife Mary Jean Rosenberry Ferris, who operated the store "Joel, Incorporated," that sold Modern housewares and furnishings. Walker and McGough collaborated with the noted San Francisco landscape architect Lawrence Halprin on the interwoven interior and exterior design.
Building Notes
The Ferris House featured a notable bronze screen designed by the Spokane sculptor, enamel artist and jewelry designer Harold Balazs (1928-2017).
Alteration
Architect Bruce Walker conceived the Ferris House to be able to expand as the family grew and its needs changed. It was expanded on three occasions, twice by Walker and once by the Spokane architect William H. Trogdon, Sr., (1925-2020), who, like Walker, also attended Harvard's Graduate School of Design.
