Building History
ELS Design of Berkeley, CA, designed this $77 million combined convention center and hotel project. Bids for the construction of the convention center-hotel project began in late 1981 and continued into 1982. An article in the Oakland Tribune discussed the project's progress in 02/1982: “Construction bids are being sought for the $33.3-million Oakland Convention Center project. Last November, the contract for structural steel and metal decking work was awarded to Flint Steel Construction Co. of Tulsa, Okla., for $6.3 million. The contract for excavating and filling of the site, now nearing completion was awarded to Abdo S. Allen of Oakland, for $145,940. Actual construction will begin by June 1. Completion of the project is on schedule for November, 1982. The Oakland Convention Center will house a 57,000-square-foot exhibit hall with an additional 7,400 square feet of meeting space on the second level and an 870-car parking garage. The $44-million Hyatt Regency Oakland will be built adjacent to the convention center. The 500-room hotel is a joint project of a number of private concerns, including the Oakland Tribune. The Convention Center-Hyatt Hotel will be built on a two-block-site bounded by 10th, 11th, Broadway and Clay streets.” (See “Bids for convention center sought,” Oakland Tribune, 02/16/1981 p. 9.)
ELS Design Group partnered with Ratcliff Architects on the design of the Oakland Convention Center and Hyatt Hotel. David Brodsley of Ratcliff worked as a project designer. (See "Solana architect joins planning firm," North County Blade-Citizen, 10/06/1989, p. 37.)
