Building History
The noted landscape architect Lockwood De Forest III (1896-1949) and his wife Elizabeth Kellam De Forest (1898-1984) lived in this residence, a square hacienda formed around a central atrium. In 1928, the San Francisco architect William W. Wurster (1895-1973) designed a house on the same property for Elizabeth Kellam's parents. This later dwelling was known as the Frederick B. Kellam House, a linear ranch house design that resembled recent work that Wurster had designed for Mrs. Sadie Gregory in Scotts Valley, CA, the year before. A sketch plan dated 05/12/1928 is present in the University of California, Berkeley, College of Environmental Design Documents Collection, Berkeley, CA. The design also included a rough landscape plan worked out with Lockwood De Forest.
According to the US Census of 1930, the house had an approximate value of $22,000, a significant amount of money at the time.
