According to architectural historians Henry and Elsie Rathburn Withey, Hodges came to the U.S. from England at age 24, c. 1888, and died in Corona del Mar, CA, at the age of 80.

After his resignation as Campus Architect at Stanford University, Hodges traveled in Europe for two years.
