Biograpical Notes

There has been some confusion about Pelton's birth and death dates. The California Death Index (CDI) noted that a John Cotter Pelton was born on 07/20/1856 and died on 10/30/1952. The death date varies significantly from that cited by Christopher VerPlanck, in his essay, "Pelton's Cheap Dwellings," who indicated that he died just after his father in 1913. (See: Christopher VerPlanck, FoundSF.org, "Pelton's Cheap Dwellings," accessed 05/16/2014.) It appears from records that the CDI was correct, and that John C. Pelton, Jr., lived well past 1913, dying 39 years later. Prior to 05/15/2020, PCAD used the incorrect dates mentioned in the VerPlanck article. These were corrected on this date.

In 1907, Pelton was a registered Republican according to San Francisco voter records. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation: California State Library; Sacramento, California; Great Register of Voters, 1900-1968, accessed 05/14/2020.)
