A State of Washington audit indicated that the Seattle School District had too many buildings serving too few students. It indicated that the city maintained facilities for about 9,000 more students than necessary. The School Board had many difficult decisions to close a $24 million budget deficit in 2009; some of the solutions included moving 1 or 2 alternative schools in North Seattle, Summit K-12 and Alternative School #1, and altering the plans of Magnolia's Blaine K-8 and John Hay Elementary in Queen Anne to ease their overcrowding.
