"Father Jose Antonio de Jesus Maria de Murguia was born Dec. 10, 1715 at Domayguia Alva, Spain and came to Mexico as a layman. He became a Franciscan Jan. 29, 1736 and was ordained in 1744. He served as a missionary in Sierra Gorda until 1748 for nineteen years and built the first masonry church of San Miguel. He was sent to California in 1768 and founded the Mission of Santa Clara where was architect, director and laborer. Died May 12,1783."
