This article discussed the 50th anniversary of discount retail chains Walmart, Target and Kmart, all founded in 1962.It stated: "There were plenty of stand-aloe or regional 'five-ant-ten' or 'dime stores' back then, including Woolworth's Ben Franklin and W.T. Grant. Kmart, Walmart and Target built on the concept and brought self-service, low-price shopping to the masses." The article noted: "In 1967, discount stores accounted for 42% of all retail sales. In 2010, that number rose to 87%, [Walter] Loeb says, citing data from Consumer Reports." Walter Loeb was "...a retail consultant and former analyst who spent 20 years as an executive for May Co. and Macy's." (See pp. 1B-2B.)
