He was in the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity at the UW, and was a fraternity brother of Donald Coryell (1924-2010), who played defensive back for the UW Huskies football team and became a well-known and innovative college and professional football coach during the 1960s and 1980s. The UW Tyee Yearbook,1952, (p. 59) indicated that Barden was an art major that also worked for Columns magazine. He switched from Art to Architecture about 1953.

Barden "Bud" Erickson was born in 1930 to Lloyd and Myrtle Erickson. Barden had a twin, Robert V. Erickson. In 1940, the Ericksons lived at 5538 34th Avenue NE in Seattle's Bryant neighborhood, northeast of the University of Washington campus. They remained at this address in 1942. The architect attended the University of Washington (UW) between roughly 1950 and 1954, and was a member of the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. This house was located at 1617 East 47th Street in 1950. After graduating from UW in 1954, he joined the US Air Force as an officer, and spent the years 1955 and 1956 in service.

Lloyd E. Erickson ( worked as a dairyman in 1940. (He was the plant manager at Wildwood Dairy in 1942, as per the Seattle, Washington, City Directory, 1942, p. 332.) The 1940 US Census indicated that he had completed two years of college.
