Relocation
Born in Los Angeles, Donald Akira was relocated with his family to the Japanese Internment Camp at Gila River, AZ, between 10/19/1942 and 09/04/1945. This camp opened on 07/20/1942, so Donald and his family arrived about three months after it began receiving detainees. The facility and its two main components, Butte Camp and Canal Camp, closed completely by 11/16/1945. Many Jaoanese-Americans from Los Angeles, Sacramneto, and Fresno, CA, were sent here, making Gila River, at one time, AZ's fourth-largest population center.
Between 1960 and 1964, at least, Akira lived at home with his parents, Ben and Yaeko Akira at 1840 Kenneth Way in Pasadena. (See Pasadena, California, City Directory, 1960, p. 7 andPasadena, California, City Directory, 1964-1965, p. 8.)
