At age 16, the 1900 US Census listed 16-year-old Luther living with his maternal grandmother Mary Towns (born c. 01/1840 in GA) and his sister Jennie Mayo (born c. 03/1882 in GA) on Broad Street in Albany, GA, about 182 miles south of Atlanta.

He and his wife lived at 946 South Arapahoe Street in Los Angeles on 09/07/1918. According to a US passport application of 06/05/1924, Marguerite lived in Paris between 1889 and 04/1907.Her parents were Jules T. Schmitt and Marie Carron.

Marguerite Schmitt had divorced Mayo by the time of this passport application.

On 08/24/1923, he wed Marguerite Maloney Bridwell (born 10/04/1901 in GA-d. 05/04/1993 in Los Angeles County, CA) in Oakland, CA. As per their marriage certificate, Marguerite Maloney's parents were Thomas J. In 1942, Mayo's World War II draft registration card listed him as Caucasian with a light complexion, blue eyes and brown/gray hair. It also noted he was balding. He stood 5-feet, 9-inches tall and weighed 170 pounds.
