Relocation
Svarz was born in Chicago, IL, but lived in a house at 318 Maverick Grove, San Antonio, TX, in 06/1900; the family moved from Chicago to TX sometime between 1888-1897; in 1900, Louis Svarz's paternal grandmother, Antoni, (born 12/1825 in Austria) resided with the family. He spent c. 1904-1908 in Cambridge, MA, attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT); According to his World War I Service Statement Card, Svarz lived in Bellevue, WA, c. 1918. A note in the American Architect indicated, however, that he spent 1919-1920 in KY: "Louis Svarz, architect, who has been stationed at Camp Taylor, Kentucky, with the U.S. field artillery for the past year, has returned to Seattle and opened offices at 24 Seattle National Bank Building." (See "Personals," American Architect, vol. CXVII, no. 2309, 03/24/1920, p. 382.) Making a public statement of his US military service just after World War I, may have been politic for an architect with a German surname. Popular anger with Germany and Austro-Hungary was high during this period.
Svarz died in the 98052 zip code of Redmond, WA.
His father, Anton, (born 12/1848 in Austria), worked as a day laborer in 1900; his wife was Otilie (born 04/1859 in Austria); together, they had 11 children, 8 of whom were alive in 1900; the children included: Alvin (born 02/1882 in Austria); Tenia (born 05/1884 in IL); Anton (born 05/1888 in IL); Laura (born 06/1897 in TX); and Alene (born 02/1900 in TX);
SSN: 539-20-2215; Svarz entered the U.S. Army in 1918; at age 31, he was inducted at an Army training camp in Seattle, WA, on 05/10/1918; he was awarded the rank of corporal in 06/1918; he entered the 8th Training Regiment Mortar Battery, Fort Sill, OK, 07/11/1918; later, Svarz was enrolled at the Central Officers Training School, Camp Taylor, KY, and was stationed there until his discharge on 12/03/1918.
