Relocation
Michel Andre Marx was born in Paris, France, on 12/19/1926. Marx would have been 14 when the Nazis took over in 05/1940. As a student, Marx, of Jewish descent, was arrested on 01/03/1944 in Paris, and sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp on 05/14/1944. He may have been transferred to Buchenwald at a later date. (See Ancestry.com, The National Archives at College Park; College Park, Maryland; Microfilm: A3355; ARC: 596972; Title: Lists and Registers of German Concentration Camp Inmates, 1946 - 1958; Record Group: 242; Record Group Title: National Archives Collection of Foreign Records Seized, 1675 - 1958, accessed 07/11/2024.)
He first entered the US aboard the training ship SS Marine Falcon, sailing from Le Havre, France to New York, NY, beginning on 10/11/1947. He received a French passport on 10/07/1947. It is possible that the architect Frank Lloyd Wright was the reason for his first excursion to the US, as his name was listed on an immigration form as "Person in US." He may have desired to visit Taliesin and see Frank Lloyd Wright's studio in WI. Later, Marx may have worked with Frank Lloyd Wright's students, architect Fred Langhorst and his wife and business partner Lois Wilson Langhorst. According to naturalization paperwork of 1955, Marx came to the US on foot from Mexico to Nogales, AZ, on 12/17/1948. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation The National Archives and Records Administration; Washington D.C.; Index and Manifests of Alien Arrivals at Nogales, Arizona, July 5, 1905 - 1952; NAI: 2843448; Record Group Title: Records of the Immigration and Naturalization Service, 1787-2004.; Record Group Number: 85; Microfilm Roll Number: 48, accessed 07/11/2024.) (Another date on the naturalization document stated that he had entered at Nogales on 02/28/1950.) It indicated that he had lived in CA since 06/1949. He applied for US citizenship in the District Court of the US at San Francisco, CA, on 08/10/1955. The architect Olof H. Dahlstrand (1916-2014) and another draftsman, Philip S. Romigh, served as witnesses at the naturalization. It is probable that Marx had worked with Dahlstrand since 08/10/1950. This naturalization form indicated that Marx had lived in San Francisco, CA, and Berkeley, CA, during the 1950-1953 period. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation The National Archives at San Francisco; San Bruno, California; Petitions For Naturalization, 8/6/1903 - 12/29/1911; NAI Number: 605504; Record Group Title: Records of District Courts of the United States, 1685-2009; Record Group Number: 21, accessed 07/11/2024.) Dahlstrand worked with the Langhorsts c.1950.
Between 1955 and 1957, at least, Marx lived at 2504 Etna Street in Berkeley, CA. (See Oakland, California, Telephone Directory, 1955, p. 338 and Oakland, California, Telephone Directory, 1957, p. 338.)
Marx dwelled at 142 Gravatt Drive in Berkeley in 1960. Spouse
He wed Bernadette Bouchart (born 07/04/1924 in Paris, France) on 04/20/1948 in Washington, DC. (See Ancestry.com, Source Information Ancestry.com. District of Columbia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1810-1953 [database on-line]. Lehi, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2016, accessed 07/11/2024.)
Biographical Notes
As per his naturalization paperwork of 1955, Marx stood 5-feet, 10-inches tall and weighed 175 pounds. He was Caucasian with a ruddy complexion, with brown eyes and hair. This document indicated that his little finger on his left hand had been amputated.
Marx returned from London, England, to Seattle, WA, aboard PanAm Flight #123 on 11/14/1960.
