Susan Hannen Jones grew up in Bellingham, WA, where she graduated from Sehome High School. She was an excellent student at Sehome, enabling her to gain admission to Stanford University, Stanford, CA, in 1979. after living in Stanford, CA, and Cambridge, MA, she traveled in Europe, studying in Berlin in 1994. She returned to Seattle, WA, to work for the large architectural firm of NBBJ.

Jones established her own architectural firm, atelierjones, LLC, in 2003.
