Born in Danielsonville, CT, Edwin Thomas Banning spent the first two years of his life, at least, in that city. His family moved to Newport, RI, by 1866, where his parents remained until 1868, when they had relocated to Providence, RI. Both of his parents would pass away years later at a family residence known as "The Homestead" in Newport, RI. (See Charkes Myrick Thurston and Theopilus T. The Banning Family residence stood at 37 Broadway in 1880, and was recorded as 69 Broadway in 1883. Edwin continued to reside at home in 1883. Edwin Banning maintained a practice in Rhode Island, for over 25 years. His family lived on Longmeadow Avenue in Middletown, RI, in 1900. The Newport, Rhode Island, City Directory, 1900, (p. 42),A decade later, they had a residence at 88 Benefit Street in Providence, RI, according to the 1910 US Census.

He lived at 2808 State Street in San Diego, CA, in 1915. (See San Diego, California, City Directory, 1915, p. 203.) Banning had a residence at 1059 Dover Street in the Point Loma neighborhood of San Diego between 1923 and 1931. Banning died in San Diego, CA, at the age of 76.

Parents

His mother's maiden name was Harriet Elizabeth Pitman (born 09/20/1829 in Newport, RI-d. 04/04/1909 in Newport, RI). She was descended from John Pitman (d. 11/21/1711 in Newport, RI), a Bahamas-born shipyard owner who came to Newport, RI, in 1710, following the 1708 recapture of the Bahamas by the French and Spanish. Harriet's husband was Reverend Carlos Banning (born 11/10/1819 d. 08/07/1898 in Newport, RI). whom she married on 04/06/1852 in New Bedford, MA. In 1880, the US Census recorded that Carlos Banning was both a clergyman and an agent selling sewing machines. By 1883, he sold sewing machines and pictures at a commercial address of 64 Broadway. (See Newport, Rhode Island, City Directory, 1883, p. 40.)He continued to sell pictures at his home from the early 1890s until his death in 1898. Edwin had six siblings, two of whom died early in life: Matilda Thurston Banning (born 06/30/1854 in North Dighton, MA), William Carlos Banning (born 05/17/1860 in Phenix, RI-d. 10/08/1864 in Danielsonville, CT), Arthur Stapes Banning (born 06/09/1862 in Norwich, CT-d. 01/31/1865 in Danielsonville, CT), Mary Elizabeth Banning (born 02/28/1866 in Newport, RI-d. 01/24/1902 in New York, NY) and Alice Crocker Banning (born 10/08/1868 in Providence, RI). Spouse

He wed Isabella Thornton (born 06/10/1864 in Belfield, Rochdale, Lancashire, England-d. 06/15/1915 in San Diego, CA) in Taunton, MA, on 06/13/1883. Her parents were James D. Thornton and Sarah Ann Taylor. According to the 1910 US Census, Isabella came to the US in 1867. Isabella died young, a few days before her 51st birthday.

He and Isabella had one daughter, Bernice Thornton Banning (born 02/21/1885 in Providence, RI).
