Personal

Relocation

Born in Denmark in 12/1822, Raun may have resided with the family of Johann Christian Heinrich Schrøder, as per the 1834 Danish Census. He was one of seven people living in the Schrøder household in Køng, Hammer, Præstø, Denmark. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Rigsarkivet: Danish National Archives; Denmark; Folketælling 1834, accessed 05/30/2022.)

Raun resided in Coloma, El Dorado County, CA, by 1850, where he likely came as a miner during the Gold Rush. He was listed as an carpenter in the 1850 US Census, and as an architect there according to the California State Census of 1852. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1850; Census Place: Coloma, El Dorado, California; Roll: 34; Page: 401b, accessed 02/17/2022 and Ancestry.com, Source Citation California State Library; Sacramento, California; 1852 California State Census; Roll #: 1; Repository Collection #: C144:1; Page: 203; Line: 31, accessed 02/17/2022.)

As noted in San Francisco County voter records of 1869, Raun was naturalized in San Francisco's US Circuit Court on 08/23/1855, although this may not have been correct. Another record stated that he was naturalized in California's 11th District Court in Placerville, CA, on 08/23/1855. Witnesses included men named William H. Taylor and George Trimble. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation California State Archives; Sacramento, California; Film Number: 1451491; Film Description: El Dorado County Naturalization Card Index, Kl-U, 1850-1986, accessed 02/18/2022.)

He registered to vote in San Francisco on 09/30/1868 and resided at the International Hotel in San Francisco, CA, in 1868-1869. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation California State Library; Sacramento, California; Great Registers, 1866-1898; Collection Number: 4-2A; CSL Roll Number: 41; FHL Roll Number: 977096, accessed 02.17/2022.)

An "Edward Raun," born in Denmark c. 1823, lived with his wife Charlotte Phelps and son Edward Phelps Raun in Ithaca, NY, in 1870. The US Census indicated that this Edward Raun was prosperous, owning approximately $8,000 worth of real estate and having savings of about $10,000. It seems likely that this was the same Edward T. Raun, as his son had been born in CA, and both his wife and son would die in the Bay Area. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1870; Census Place: Ithaca, Tompkins, New York; Roll: M593_1104; Page: 263A, accessed 05/30/2022.) The 1875 New York Census, however, indicated that Charlotte and Edward Phelps Raun continued to live in Ithaca, in a house worth about $8,000. Their immediate neighbors either lived on estates comparable in value, or had values of between $700 to $1,500. Charlotte had four relatives living with her, perhaps to share expenses, and retained an African-American domestic servant, Mary Weems (born c. 1845 in VA). Edward P. Raun attended Cornell University between 1873 and 1875. (See Ancestry.com, Source Information Ancestry.com. New York, U.S., State Census, 1875 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2013, accessed 05/30/2022 and The Ten-Year Book of the Cornell University, 1868-1878, [Ithaca, NY: B. Hermon Smith, 1878], p. 105.)

The 1880 US Census recorded that Raun lived alone on Kearney Street in the vicinity of Stockton and Dupont Streets. (Dupont was later renamed "Grant Avenue" after the 1906 Earthquake and Fire.) This census recorded that Raun was married at the time, although he did not live with his wife or any children in San Francisco. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1880; Census Place: San Francisco, San Francisco, California; Roll: 74; Page: 694C; Enumeration District: 054, accessed 02/17/2022.)

In 1883, Raun lived at 601 California Street in San Francisco, CA. (See the San Francisco, California, City Directory, 1883, p. 874.)

The architect died at 522 Van Ness Avenue in San Francisco on 09/22/1894. San Francisco County death records indicated that Raun passed away at 822 Van Ness Avenue from "cirrhosis of the liver and dropsy." (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation California Department of Public Health, courtesy of www.vitalsearch-worldwide.com. Digital Images, accessed 02/17/2022.) He was buried at Woodlawn Cemetery, Colma, CA.

Spouse

He may have wed Charlotte Augusta Phelps (born c. 1832 in Delaware County, NY-d. 05/23/1897 in Oakland, CA). She last lived at 204 East 10th Street in Oakland, CA. Her son, Edward, lived next door at 202 East 10th. (See Oakland, California, City Directory, 1897, p. 395.)

Children

He may have had a son, Edward Phelps Raun (born 10/1856 in CA-d. 06/15/1938 in CA).
