Firm Notes
During Richard Meier's first seven years of practice, his work was concentrated on the East Coast of the US. The firm changed its name to "Richard Meier and Associates, Architects" in 1971 and continued to focus on work east of the Mississippi, in Europe and Asia until about 1984. (Meier won a design competition for the Japanese architectural journal Shinkenchiku in 1976, an event that triggered more interest in his work there.) Meier set his sights on West Coast projects by 1984-1985, when he attracted the first of many commissions in California, most notably the highly significant Getty Center commission. Having secured this huge and lucrative job, Meier opened his first office in Los Angeles in 1985.
