Active 1910-1942

Firm Notes

This Portland-based firm had a complex history. It developed from an architectural office founded by John E. Tourtellotte in Boise, ID, in 1896. He agreed to a partnership with Charles Frederick Hummel in 1901 and 1902, but the latter did not get partnership name recognition until 1910.

Tourtellotte and Hummel transferred the partnership to Portland, OR, in 1913 to found a new branch there, but they retained the original Boise office. In 1922, John Tourtellotte and Charles Hummel severed their business relationship. Charles Frederick Hummel's son, Francis Konrad "Frank" Hummel, joined the Portland offiice in 1922 and worked there until 1935, when he returned to work with his father in Boise.

Tourtellotte left the partnership with the Hummels in 1930. Despite this break, the Portland office remained to be called "Tourtellotte and Hummel" until 1934, and the Boise office continued to use this professional name until 1942. To summarize, Tourtellotte and a member of the Hummel Family practiced together in actuality only between 1910 and 1930. It was highly unusual for a firm name to remain in place this long following the resignation of one or more partners.

After World War II, a new firm, Hummel, Hummel and Jones operated in Boise between 1945 and 1967. It was followed by Hummel, Hummel, Jones and Shawver, Architects, between 1967 amd 1977. The next firm was known as Hummel, Jones, Shawver and Miller, P.A., between 1977 and 1980. This incarnation of the firm lasted only three years until it was replaced by Hummel, Jones, Miller and Hunsucker, P.A., between 1980 and 1984. This became Hummel.Dropping, Architects, P.A., between 1984 and 1995. It became Hummel and Hunsucker, Architects, P.A., from 1995 until 1996. It then shortened its title to Hummel Architects, PLLC, in 1996.
