The firm started operations around 1906, with a commission from the Western Pacific Railroad to build its Oakland-to-Oroville line. The company did not officially incorporate in the State of CA until 1925. The W.A. Bechtel Company was a family business run at first by Warren A. Bechtel, Sr., and his sons Warren A. Bechtel, Jr., Kenneth Bechtel, and Stephen Bechtel. Warren, Sr.'s brother Arthur Bechtel also worked in this newly incorporated construction company. In its earliest days of operation, W.A. Bechtel operated from offices in Oakland, CA.
Headquartered in San Francisco, CA, became Bechtel Corporation the world's largest civil engineering and construction firm in the world (2004); Warren A. Bechtel's brother, Arthur, and sons, Warren Jr., Stephen, and Kenneth, have all been active in building the fortunes of Bechtel Corporation, still a privately held business in 2004; his son, Stephen, took over the company upon his death in 1933, and his son, Stephen Jr., in turn, assumed the chairmanship in 1947.
In 1956, Bechtel had a corporate headquarters at 220 Bush Street in San Francisco, CA.
