Overview

Located on the northwest corner of 15th Avenue NE and NE 40th Street, the Commodore Apartments stood across the street from a main entrance to the University of Washington in Seattle. The Commodore and its neighbor to the north, the Duchess Apartments, occupied a site that sloped from the south up to the north on 15th Avenue NE, a main thorougfare.

Building History

Seattle architect Earl A. Roberts (1886-1939) designed the Commodore Apartment Building and its neighbor the Duchess Apartments. The former was finished in 1925, while the latter was finished in 1927.

This building was bought from Herbert Smith by the University of Washington in 1960. In 1997, it began to house students.

Alteration

The Commodore and the adjoining Duchess Apartments were both owned by the University of Washington (UW) in 2008, and operated as housing for graduate students.
