Building History

The Webster School operated from 1908 until 1979. The following year, 1980, the Nordic Heritage Museum opened in the former school. The museum occupied the space from 1980 until it built a new facility in 2018.

It was one of eight properties being considered for sale or long-term lease by the Seattle Public School Administration in 2007. A portion of school's western property was used by the Seattle Public Schools as a park. In 2009, the school district formerly sold the piece of property to the Seattle Parks Department, which became responsible for its upkeep and maintenance. A web site published by the Seattle Public Schools indicated: "In 1997, Seattle Parks and Recreation opened Webster Park on the western portion of the Webster School site, and in 2009, SPS sold that portion of the property to Parks and Recreation. A Joint Use Agreement is in place, and the district plans to schedule use of the park during the school day to support recess and physical education programs." (See Seattle Public Schools.org, "Webster School Modernization and Addition Project," accessed 03/10/2020.)

In 2019, the Seattle Public Schools began consideration of returning the Webster School for teaching use. Plans called for the seismic upgrading of the facility and its enlargement. The Seattle Public Schools stated of the project: "In 1997, Seattle Parks and Recreation opened Webster Park on the western portion of the Webster School site, and in 2009, SPS sold that portion of the property to Parks and Recreation. A Joint Use Agreement is in place, and the district plans to schedule use of the park during the school day to support recess and physical education programs."
