Building History
Ebsworth moved to Hunt's Point, WA, from Saint Louis, MO, c. 2000, and built a $20 million, 9,400-square-foot residence on Lake Washington designed by architect Jim Olson (born 1940) of Olson Sundberg Kundig Allen (OSKA). This house was finished in 2004. Ebsworth had a large and significant art collection which was featured in an exhibition at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and at the Seattle Museum of Art later in 2000. Olson designed the Ebsworth House to a great extent around this art collection.
Ebsworth had planned to donate 65 of his more important works to the Seattle Art Museum (SAM) in 2007, but this gift never materialized. A Gaston Lachaise sculpture, "Standing Woman," (cast in 1993) was visible to guests arriving at the house's front door. Ebsworth's collection auctioned for $317.8 million on 11/13/2018, with the Lachaise reaching $3,732,500, well above its estimate of $1.5-$2.5 million.
The residence set a record for the costliest sale price ever reached for a house in the Seattle area, when it changed hands for $37.5 million on 04/16/2019. Ebsworth's estate sold it to an undisclosed entity known as "Hunts Point Properties Trust." (See Mike Rosenberg, "At $37.5 million, Hunts Point home sets a Seattle-area record," Seattle Times, 04/23/3029, p. A7-A8.) Initially, in 2003, the house and land had an assessed value of $18,240,000, with $13,147,000 of the value in the land.
Building Notes
The residence occupied a 3.27-acre (142,561-square-foot) site, and contained 8,760 square feet arrayed on one floor, with a 660-square-foot finished basement. (The basement had 2,180 square feet, in total, 1,520 unfinished.)
