Overview

Completed in 1981, the 33-story, reinforced concrete Continental Place Tower was one of the tallest condominium blocks erected at that time in Seattle, WA. The Seattle architectural firm of Whiteley Jacobsen Associates served as the designer.

Building History

For many years, this was the tallest residential tower in Seattle, WA. A note in the Seattle Times said of Continental Place and its rooftop garden: “The contest jury cited the roof garden at Continental Plaza for its use of materials, its ‘usable garden spaces for residents and the excellent enclosure of spaces and framing views.’ The design was by Johnson Associates, Seattle landscape architect. Landscape Specialties was the contractor. The 34-story [sic] tower was designed by Whitely, Jacobsen and Associates, architect, and built by the Baugh Construction Co.” Multiple sources indicated that Continental Place had only 33 stories.(See Rooftop garden, pocket park cited by landscape architects," Seattle Times, 11/07/1982, p, D6.)

Building Notes

A 1-bedroom apartment on the Continental Place's 22nd floor had an asking price of 849,000 c. 2008.

A rooftop garden designed by Johnson Associates, Landscape Architects, received a design award from the Washington Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) in 1982. (See Rooftop garden, pocket park cited by landscape architects," Seattle Times, 11/07/1982, p, D6.)
