Building History
Born in Haverhill, MA, Frederick M. Padelford (1875-1942) taught in the English Department and worked as an administrator at the University of Washington, Seattle, from 1901-1942. Bruce Morris Walker of Walker McGough Architects, was the Partner-in-Charge of this project, working with Designers, Robert Nixon and Edward Musgrove, among others; a building program had been formulated by a UW Ad Hoc Programming Committee in early May 1963, and by May 7, 1963, Walker-McGough had read it; the committee included Dean Solomon Katz, Chairman, Prof. Carl. B. Allendoerfer, Prof. Robert Dietz, Associate Professor Robert L. Fernald, and Prof. Andrew R. Hilen, Jr.
A parking garage was built at the same time as Padelford Hall, the two projects costing $5,013,000; Padelford opened in part in October 1966 and was finished in December 1966; George E. Teufel Company served as the General Contractor for the two projects; total square footage needed in this project for the College of Arts and Sciences was set at 68,880 square feet.
As a member of the UW Architectural Review Committee at the time, Minoru Yamasaki made design suggestions about the building to the architects;
Alteration
Between 11/29/2011-12/05/2012, two elevators were completely renovated in Padelford "...upgrading them to meet standard ADA and current elevator code requirments." (See "Project Number: 203454."
