Building History

Florence Nightingale Hyde Chick (1848–1924), mother of the Berkeley engineer, real estate developer and contractor Guy Hyde Chick, erected this house in Berkeley, CA, to enable her sons to have an excellent education at Berkeley High School and the University of California, Berkeley. Florence had divorced her bigamist husband George Chick (1834–1912), a peripatetic miner, whom she discovered had an alternate family elsewhere in CA. (See Daniella Thompson, Berkeley Architectural Heritage Association.com, "Guy Hyde Chick: The man behind the house," published 03/13/2007 and 03/21/2007, accessed 03/18/2025.)

Florence Chick resided here during the 1890s.
