Building History
The Carmel-Plaza commercial development opened in 1960, and contained a small I. Magnin and Company Department Store when it began. An 1959 article published in the Oakland Tribune stated: “Carmel has been selected as the location for the newest store in the I. Magnin & Co. group of specialty stores on the Pacific Coast, according to an announcement today by Hector Escobasa, president. Carmel-Plaza, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Leslie C. Fenton of Pebble Beach, is under construction. The project encompasses an entire block bounded by Ocean Avenue, Junipero Avenue, Mission Street and Seventh Avenue. The I. Magnin Building will be situated on the southwest corner of Ocean Avenue and Juniper. The Carmel-Plaza will also include other shops and a branch of the Bank of America. The building, totaling 10,000 square feet and completely air conditioned, is scheduled to be opened early in 1960. Olof Dahlstrand of Carmel has been assigned as architect. The leasing agent for the Carmel-Plaza is A.W. Clark of Carmel.” (See "Notes on Bay Commerce," Oakland Tribune, 05/13/1959, p. 58.)
