Overview

Completed in 2001, the Chicken Point Cabin was one of several weekend houses that helped to make Tom Kundig an international architectural star during the 2000s.

Building History

Located on Lake Hayden in northern Idaho, this Modern lakeside cottage was designed by Tom Kundig of Olson, Sunberg, Kundig, Allen (OSKA), Architects of Seattle, WA. Other members of the OSKA team who worked on the Chicken Point Cabin included, Steven Rainville, project architect, and Debbie Kennedy, interior designer.Phil Turner produced the "gizmo" used to open and close the Chicken Point House's window-wall.

Doric, Incorporated, of Spokane, WA, served as building contractor.

Building Notes

The Chicken Point Cabin received international attention from architectural magazines and won several awards. The awards included: Residential Architect Design Awards, Grand Award, 2005; American Institute of Architects, (AIA) National Honor Awards, Honor Award, 2004; Chicago Athenaeum American Architecture Awards, American Architecture Award, 2004; AIA Northwest and Pacific Region Honor Awards, Honor Award, 2003; AIA Seattle Honor Awards, Honor Award, 2002.

AIA Seattle Honor Award judges stated of the house: ""This `little machine of a house' makes big moves with a small palette....'" (See Elizabeth Rhodes, Seattle Times, "Architects' projects honored," 11/24/2002. p. E1.)
