Overview
Los Angeles architect Arthur E. Harvey designed this seven-story office building to house a lucrative segment of the office space market, that for doctors, dentists and other high-earning professionals. This building type became increasingly common on the Pacific Coast at this time. Harvey utilized a Y-shaped or "hensfoot" flooorplan for the Santa Monica Professional Building to enable the maximum of light and air to enter each office.
Building History
The Los Angeles Times noted of the Santa Monica Professional Building in 1927: "A professional building to be utilized by doctors, dentists and lawyers will be constructed immediately on the southeast corner of Wilshire Boulevard and Seventh street, Santa Monica, according to announcement of Luther T. Mayo and Preston S. Wright. The unit will be owned under a co-operative system, by which the tenant-owner may obtain ownership of his suite and have a voice in the management of the structure. The upper floor of the Class A six-story structure will be occupied by attorneys. Stores will be situated on the first floor. The building will be of Spanish and Italian architecture and was designed by Arthur E. Harvey." (See "New Structures Rising in Industrial District: Professional Units Planned," Los Angeles Times, 09/25/1927, p. E1.) Construction began in 1927 and concluded in 1928.
Architect Arthur E. Harvey (1884-1971) collaborated a great deal with the builder/developer Luther T. Mayo, Sr., (1884-1974) and the builder/developer Preston S. Wright during the 1920s, building both high-rise residential and commercial buildings. The trio produced the Wilshire Professional Building at 3875 Wilshire Boulevard in 1929.
