Overview

This science building was dedicated to University of Oregon Professor of Geology Thomas Condon (1822–1907), in 08/1925. Born in Ireland, and trained as a Congregationalist minister, Condon came to OR from NY. He became OR's first State Geologist in 1872 and joined the University of Oregon when it was founded in 1876, serving until his death. According to the Oregon Historical Society, Condon's book The Two Islands was the foundation for the study of Oregon's historical geology." (See "Notable Oregonians: Thomas Condon - Geologist, Paleontologist," accessed 08/10/2015.) At its opening, it housed several departments--geology, geography, and the new study of psychology--and the main library on the U of O campus. The 1925 building was intended to be the northern wing of a larger science building, but plans for the original scheme were scrapped by the 1940s. Styles had changed drastically after World War II, and integrating old and new would have been complicated at that time. A southern wing was finally erected in 1967 by the architectural firm of Stanton, Boles, Maguire, and Church.

Building History

Construction on Condon Hall began in 10/1924 and the building dedicated on 02/08/1925.

Alteration

According to Edward Teague's "The Architecture of the University of Oregon," Condon Hall was renovated between 05/1954 and 10/1954. It had a south wing added in 1967, and a new fire escape installed on its west wall in 1975. (See Edward Teague, "The Architecture of the University of Oregon: Condon Hall," accessed 08/10/2015.)
